When there is no consequence for poor work ethic, and no reward for good work ethic, there is no motivation.
I came across this quote today and wondered, is this true? Should we not be self-motivated based on the fact that our paycheck is the reward? Should we let the poor work ethic folks damper our self-motivation? I never liked to complicate things, such as when you were hired for a job, you did that job. When I used to drive a truck, the customers I picked up from and delivered to were essentially my bosses. If I were late or had a problem with the product, they would inform me, and I was responsible for making things right. The same goes when I was self-employed. I was the only one to blame when there was clutter in the backroom or when I was out of product when I should not have been. Neither when I drove a truck nor when I was self-employed did I receive any reward for a good work ethic. Although I did hear about it on the very few occasions that I was late with a delivery or when I was out of a product when I shouldn’t have been. I have always strived to do my best, so doing better at something was always my motivation. Granted, there were times when my motivation was slacking, and unfortunately, when life dishes you green beans, sometimes you have to ponder a little to figure out what to do with them.
This quote today made me realize it is a perfect example of what plays out here at Smithwoods. It’s destructive, and it’s an infection. I’ll even add to the quote with my quote, Where there is no motivation, there is death.
With that knowledge, many would wonder why we want to stay with a company we believe is destined for doom. It all goes back to my self-motivation to do better. That and because the customers that come to the campground are our bosses. Without those customers, we don’t get paid. Those customers who leave negative reviews make me want to fix what I can. Unfortunately, like those green beans, there are things that I don’t have control over that stop me from accomplishing everything I would love to do. As for all the customers who leave positive reviews or don’t leave reviews at all, I tip my hat and say thank you. Thank you to all the customers who continue to book multiple times and year after year. Us work campers, Tami, Brian, Jo, Rebecca, and myself, silently hear the appreciation.
